Born and raised in Zushi, Miyazaki joined Riviera in 2005 and became a member of the Environmental Maintenance Department.
As a professional gardener following in the footsteps of my grandfather, and as a local resident, I understand the difficulty of growing plants in this area.
In the Riviera, which has an extraordinary commitment to sustainability, Miyazaki's planting goals are:
``Maintaining the same beauty no matter when you visit,'' he says.
It doesn't change no matter when you visit
to maintain beauty
Riviera Zushi Marina is so vast that it can easily fit three Tokyo Domes. The Environmental Development Department, led by Miyazaki, protects and nurtures all of the ``rooted things'', including the entire site as well as the adjacent Kotsubo Iijima Park, Kotsubo Seaside Park, and public roads. In addition to managing plantings such as grass, flowers, and palm trees, we also manage our own circular vegetable garden, which starts with preparing the soil for the fields.
``I've been trying through trial and error to figure out how I want the plants to grow, and I'm constantly taking care of them every day so that whenever customers visit, they're fresh and healthy. It's a lot of fun.
Golf course level lawn care
New initiatives in our own vegetable garden
Miyazaki's work involves nature, so it is not possible to create a manual.
“Since humans are transplanting plants from a different environment based on their egos, it is important to take responsibility for making sure they grow well in that area.Caring involves feeling the plants with your hands and making changes to them. Put your hand in and touch the tree.”
The grass by the pool is especially carefully watched. ``Behind the scenes where our customers praise us, saying, ``I've never seen such beautiful grass,'' we are actually putting in a lot of effort. The greenkeeper of the flagship Riviera Country Club came to Japan from LA for a study session and said, ``I've never seen such beautiful grass.'' Management knowledge has deepened and I am actively incorporating new technology. Salt damage is the biggest enemy when it comes to managing grass near the seaside. In order to keep the grass green all year round, we purposely change the type of grass between the sea side and the inside, and if the grass gets exposed to salt water, we wash it off with water. Repeat that every day. ”
Miyazaki says with a smile, but it must be a daunting task with no goal.
We are also focusing on sustainable urban development.
``Food loss has been attracting attention, but Riviera has been working on ``circular farming'' since 2006, shortly after I joined the company. Vegetable scraps from restaurants are temporarily processed and mixed into the soil of the vegetable garden as compost, and pesticide-free vegetables are grown in the rich soil. Complete recycling of food has been achieved within Riviera Zushi Marina. Chefs and other Riviera staff members also learned about soil preparation and the environment in which vegetables are grown every day in this vegetable garden, increasing their love for food and awareness of environmental issues. Please try eating the vegetables harvested from the garden at our restaurant.
Not a craftsman who manages the planting
I want to be a service person
Miyazaki's team not only manages the plants on the premises, but also provides the Riviera Green Care Service, which cares for private gardens. The concept of this work is to approach it from a perspective unique to Riviera, which is different from that of a so-called "planter."
“My grandfather, who was a gardener, was also like that, but in the gardening industry there are many people who approach their work as their own work.I have the exact opposite idea. We would like to come to you and create a beautiful garden together with you. This is because we want our customers to not only enjoy the joy of admiring their garden, but also enjoy its daily care.Maybe our idea is more like a service industry than a craftsman's job. Hmm. This is something I learned from Riviera staff in other departments."
As he speaks, Miyazaki's eyes are full of life and he is filled with love for people and plants.
