Riviera Country Club

The Riviera Country Club (RCC), the venue for the Los Angeles Open, one of the top professional golf tournaments, maintains tournament conditions as much as possible even when the main tournament is not being held. , we are working hard to maintain the course so that we can welcome players.
So, what is the ``tournament condition'' that RCC maintenance staff strives to maintain?
At tournaments, while the ball is in motion, players and the gallery watch closely to see where it goes. The game takes a dramatic turn when the ball rolls on the green and makes an unexpectedly tricky move. It's a natural thing. The terrain, wind, and turf conditions... In other words, the best tournament conditions are to keep things as they are.

Just as nature is,
suitable for battle

At one point, the grass in the fairway area just in front of the 18th tee was completely trimmed. The lush green grass looked pretty, but it didn't match the design that architect George C. Thomas Jr. had given to this beautiful but challenging course.
No matter how beautiful the greenery is, it's meaningless if it doesn't function as a place for top players to compete.
One of George Thomas' aims is to create visual pressure on players by intentionally leaving the course greens as natural as possible. The thicket of dead grass that stands in the way gives golfers a shudder. At the same time, if you are a top player with excellent technique and a fighting spirit, you will be motivated to conquer anything. And I can't imagine the joy I felt when I cleared this difficult point. The contrast between green and non-green areas creates drama.

Don't betray your dreams

Those who aspire to play at RCC are well aware of the drama of the battles that have been played out many times in the past. You could even say that they aim to become RCCs because they long for the dramas in their memories. If you are an amateur player, you may only have a once-in-a-lifetime chance to make your dreams come true.
In order to meet the expectations of such people, it is essential to maintain the course conditions as they were when so many dramas were born.
However, there are difficulties in keeping things ``natural''. If humans intervene, it is no longer natural, but on the other hand, if humans do not intervene, nature will change into a wild state.
RCC staff continues to strive for this exquisite balance every day.
