The whole of Japan rejoiced
A major comeback victory

This year, the PGA Tour's Genesis Invitational will be held at the Riviera Country Club (RCC), the flagship of the Riviera Group, in Los Angeles, USA.
The 2019 RCC Tournament was held in Tokyo on Saturday. Starting this season, the prize money was increased to an astounding $4 million (approximately 600 million yen), and the field was limited to 70 players, roughly half the number of regular tournaments, making it even more difficult to qualify. This year, Hideki Matsuyama's dramatic comeback victory galvanized the entire nation. Entering the final day, six strokes behind the leader, he scored three consecutive birdies and no bogeys, setting a course record of 62. His impressive performance ignited excitement among the on-site spectators, commentators, and media. "It's a special joy to win this tournament at RCC, owned by a Japanese golfer I'm friendly with, and hosted by my idol, Tiger Woods," Matsuyama said. In addition to achieving the feat of becoming the first Japanese player to win at RCC, Matsuyama's inclusion in the winning lineup of both the Masters and Genesis tournaments was an incredibly joyous occasion for us Japanese. RCC will host the U.S. Women's Open in 2026, its 100th anniversary, the Los Angeles Olympics in 2028, and the U.S. Open in 2031. Look forward to the RCC becoming even more refined.
